Welcome back to another - hopefully! - productive, educational and enjoyable year via monthly round-ups in my garden. The stabilisers are still very much on for this beginner, but I’m feeling a lot clearer and a little more confident about the bigger picture and getting my hands dirty after half a growing season under my belt. For anyone new here, there’s a juicy post all about the generous plot we gained along with our first house purchase around this time last year and if you click here you’ll see a whole host of newbie-gardener-related pieces as well as 2023’s monthly updates.

The Wiltshire Pantry is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

In a bid to remind myself what sort of thing I wrote and how I laid out these garden updates previously, I’ve just re-read them all and it was a real joy (if one can say that about their own work without sounding like a smug wotsit?). As previously discussed in a more general sense, every post I write and photo I take is second-guessed by yours truly, and looking back at my garden updates in particular, I think that was silly. Isn’t that always the way? Go out in a dress you think does nothing for you one birthday, only to look back at snaps of said bash the next and realise you looked banging, gosh, you WISH you looked like that now… and then now becomes next year and so on… Anyway, my point is, that I’m really glad I documented my first foray into growing. It doesn’t look half as bad as I felt it did at the time, in fact, I hope I can achieve something similar again, and it’s a real gift to be able to go back in time and chart my progress and learnings. Whether it’s your garden, your dog training or your knitting career, let this be a reminder to take lots of piccies and unashamedly save and share it all. Future You will thank you for the trip down Memory Lane if nothing else.

Back to the point of this whole thing! Februrary-March in the great outdoors outside my back door has been about cleaning and prepping and purchasing (more on the prep work here) but I’ve also done a spot of sowing, and colour and leaves are starting to come through thanks to the planting I forced myself to do in autumn (another hot tip, get that shit done when you really don’t want to, when it’s cold and wet, because again, Future You, surrounded by daffs and crocuses come spring will be so so grateful)…
